Music Law Fundamentals & Revenue Streams
Whether they realize it or not, every artist or band is a business, and each song and each recording they create carries an important set of legal rights (i.e. copyrights) that protect and can be used to monetize the new works. Because of this, musicians and their teams need to have a working understanding of what copyrights are, how they work, and how contracts can be used to protect the parties to a transaction. This session takes those complex areas of law and breaks them down into easy-to-understand concepts, using simple “plain English.” Led by entertainment attorney Max Hass, the Music Law session will start with an explanation of the basics of copyright and fundamentals of contracts, discuss the differences between masters and publishing, and provide an overview of the common revenue and royalty streams found in the music industry. Attendees will be invited to ask questions throughout the presentation, and there will also be time at the end of the session for additional questions.
